Air Circuit Breaker: The ‘Air Guardian’of Power Systems

The Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) is an indispensable "safety sentinel" in modern power distribution systems. Utilizing ambient air as its core arc quenching medium, it rapidly interrupts fault currents up to several thousand amperes during overloads or short circuits, safeguarding circuits and equipment.

 

Core Structure:

  1. Contact System: Carries normal current; generates an arc upon separation.
  2. Arc Quenching Chamber (Core): Contains specially designed metallic arc splitter plates / arc chutes. When contacts separate, the high-temperature arc is split into multiple series short arcs. The plates' excellent thermal conductivity rapidly cools the arcs. Simultaneously, the near-cathode effect accelerates arc voltage rise until arc extinction occurs.
  3. Trip Unit: Key to precise protection, comprising:
  • Thermal Trip: A bimetal strip heats and bends under sustained overload current, causing delayed tripping.
  • Magnetic Trip: An electromagnetic coil generates strong magnetic force under high short-circuit current, causing instantaneous tripping.
  • Electronic Trip (Intelligent Type): A microprocessor precisely analyzes current waveforms, enabling adjustable protection curves/tripping characteristics.

 

Core Advantages:

  1. Eco-Safe: Air medium requires no special arc-extinguishing gases or oil, eliminating pollution and explosion hazards.
  2. Ease of Maintenance: Relatively clear structure facilitates inspection and component replacement.
  3. High Cost-Effectiveness: Offers excellent value within common voltage classes (e.g., 400V-1000V AC) and medium breaking capacity ranges.
  4. High Breaking Capacity: Modern designs reliably interrupt short-circuit currents of tens to even hundreds of kiloamperes (kA).

 

 

Application Scenarios:
ACBs are the primary protective devices in both Low Voltage (LV) (up to 1000V AC) and Medium Voltage (MV) (e.g., 3.6kV-40.5kV) distribution systems, widely used in:

  • Main switchgear and distribution panels in factories and buildings
  • Protection of large electric motors
  • Transformer protection
  • Auxiliary power systems in power plants and substations
